George Romero’s The Crazies, originally released in the early 70’s, is getting the dust and polish treatment and being re-made into a major theatrical release in September 09. This is one of those little known classics that I’ve been waiting to see catch someones attention. It has all the social satire that his other works do, and a fairly dark plot that deals with a disease that is turning people into killers and the government taking over to control the outbreak.
It doesn’t quite deal with Zombies…but it’s close enough. If anything, I would say that the “crazies” in the movie are close relatives to the “infected” in 28 Days later. I’ll bet my last dollar that unlike the crazies in the orgininal, these are going to be “runners” just like in the more modern Zombie movies.
So far, Timothy Olyphant is linked to star in the movie as the towns Sheriff. If you don’t know his name yet, you soon will. He’s been in all kinds of awesome roles including the lead character in Deadwood (the HBO series) and the main evil genius in the most recent Die Hard movie.
Breck Eisner is linked to direct. His other works don’t include much that I would call note-worthy. However, he has a number of “in production” and “announced” movies that look pretty cool including The Creature from the Black Lagoon (remake), Flash Gordon (remake). Looks like he may soon be the master of the Remakes.
The Crazies Synopsis:
DAVID DUTTON (Olyphant), the sheriff of small town Ogden Marsh, Kansas, desperately tries to protect his pregnant wife, JUDY, after they discover that something in their town is making people become crazed and violent…
