Robocop (2011)

Not all that long ago, MGM made public their plans to either remake or do a sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi actioner “Robocop”. To say that the fanboys weren’t happy is an understatement. (But then again, since when has the fanboys been happy about anything?) Then not that long ago, MGM officially introduced their “Red Dawn” remake, and there was a little tidbit buried in there about Darren Aronofsky potentially coming on board to direct the “Robocop” reboot. It now looks like MGM is dead set on getting the “Pi” and “Requiem for a Dream” director onboard their project.

This from Bloody-Disgusting:

Today we received word that MGM and Phoenix Pictures are close to pegging Darren Aronofsky to direct the latest “remake”, which we also discovered is actually a sequel! Here’s the logline: Present day Los Angeles, 20 years after the termination of the RoboCop program, the city decides to reinstate the program. If this all happens, I’d love to introduce Aronofsky to THE DARK KNIGHT, where he can see how to do it right…

Wait, Los Angeles? Present day? Wasn’t the first “Robocop” set in the “near future” in Detroit? How does that then translate into “20 years after” and “present day Los Angeles”? Eh, it’s MGM. They probably got some monkey to pound out the logline.

But Aronofsky directing a hyper violent “Robocop” sequel? I’m giggly all over just thinking about it.

Beyond Hollywood

Red Dawn (2010)

The Wolverines are gathering.

Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki have been cast in MGM/UA's remake of "Red Dawn," set to begin filming in September. They join the already cast Chris Hemsworth in the story of a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers.

Peck will play Matt Eckert -- the role originated by Charlie Sheen -- the hotheaded younger brother of Hemsworth's Jed Eckert and star quarterback of their Spokane high school football team. Palicki will play Toni, the role first inhabited by Jennifer Grey. She's a tough fighter the brothers encounter who develops romantic feelings for Jed, a Marine home on leave and the group's unofficial leader.

Dan Bradley, a stunt coordinator and second-unit director on "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Quantum of Solace," will direct the revamp based on the 1984 Cold War-era film co-written and directed by John Milius. Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore penned the updated screenplay.

Contrafilm's Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson are producing, and Vince Newman is executive producing. The film is scheduled to hit theaters Sept. 24, 2010.

Peck, who is repped by UTA and the Collective, most recently appeared in "The Wackness," "Drillbit Taylor" and "What Goes Up." He again has provided the voice of Eddie in the animated sequel "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which Fox releases July 1.

Palicki, repped by UTA and Anonymous Content, co-stars on "Friday Night Lights." She next appears in the Screen Gems thriller "Legion" in January.

The Man With the X-Ray Eyes (2012)

Spanish helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has made a deal with MGM to develop a film based on director Roger Corman's 1963 pic "X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes," a movie from the Lion's library.

The original starred Ray Milland as a scientist who is near a breakthrough in X-ray vision technology when his funding is cut off. Desperate to show results, the doc applies eye drops that eventually cause him to lose control over his growing powers.

Mandeville Films partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will produce with Enrique Lopez Lavigne. Lou Arkoff will exec produce.

The director hasn't committed to a film since "28 Weeks Later."

Fresnadillo is in Hollywood this week meeting with writers for "X" and is expected to set one quickly.
