Universal Pictures is developing a remake of Drop Dead Fred for Russell Brand to star in, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Dennis McNicholas (upcoming Land of the Lost) will write the remake. Marc Platt is producing via his studio-based Marc Platt Productions along with Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
The 1991 original starred Phoebe Cates as a wallflower who loses her job and husband during the course of a lunch hour. Forced to live back home, she's reunited with her childhood imaginary friend (Brit actor Rik Mayall), who promises to help but causes more havoc.
The trade says the take for the update is to make a film in the tone of Beetlejuice, building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends. Brand would play the trouble-making pal.

Death At A Funeral (2010)
Hollywood is set to remake a British comedy from 2007, a film directed by Frank Oz, and it's set to be transplanted to the U.S. and will star Chris Rock who will also co-write the script.
It's a strange choice, especially as it will be adapted and transplanted to an American setting, particularly as the film was made less than two years ago.
Chris Rock is not only starring and co-writing the Death at a Funeral remake along with Aeysha Carr (who wrote several Everybody Hates Chris episodes), but he's also going to produce the film alongside William Horberg, Sidney Kimmel, Share Stallings and Laurence Malkin who are producers from the original version.
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that the original was made for around US $9 million and made around US $55 million worldwide, and that's quite a nice figure, but will the American version fare better and will anyone not see it?
Well one thing is that the US only brought in about $8.5 million of those box office returns, so it's fair to say that it wasn't too well seen over there, so maybe there is some mileage in remaking it for an American audience.
One question could well arise, is Chris Rock the right one to bring this project to the big screen? They are of course still looking for a director, but he's producing, co-writing and starring, so this is most definitely a Rock vehicle.
The film saw a strong British cast star in a comedy about a funeral ceremony that begins to fall apart at the edges when everything possible seems to go wrong and the worst nightmare of family and relatives turn up.
Now the film is set to be in "urban America" as the story tells us with a mainly African-American cast.
One good thing though, Rock is supposedly a big fan of the original film, and he supposedly came up with an original rework of the script. I hope that means more than transplanting it to America and changing the cast.
Remakes are happening faster and faster, and I think this is a record with a film that's been released just under two years.

The Shadow (2012)
I'm one of the few who think that The Shadow was a good and enjoyable film, and that Alec Baldwin was a great choice for the character, so although I would like to see a remake as much as the next person I'm not desperate to see it done right, I think it was already done pretty well.
However it does look like we're getting another version and with Sam Raimi still on board as one of the producers along with Michael Uslan, and we're finally getting an update on the possible film.
In the original The Shadow we saw the Alec Baldwin character play the man behind the superhero, and he was the sole Shadow, however the producer Michael Uslan is suggesting that the next Shadow film might have more than just the one person behind the mask.
Well there are a few maybes in that comment through MTV and Coming Soon, but it does sound like they're looking at being different from the first film version, but is that such a good thing? I think not. I do get the faint whiff that they are deliberately trying to make it different to the first, something that I don't believe they have to do. The first film wasn't perfect, but do they really need to go and make it as different as possible?
Well that all sounds good, but when are we going to get any idea of what the film is about? Uslan tells us that Siavash Farahani is writing the screenplay, something we heard that he was doing way back in December of 2006, and then all went quiet.
I hope that they really are putting time and love into this remake and not just trying to make it different from the first and end up with something more akin to The Spirit.

“I think the one thing going in is we all see The Shadow as more of a force of nature than a specific person in a secret identity...The Shadow may actually be many people.”

“We’ve gone back to the pulp roots, the comic book roots of The Shadow, with a dash of the radio roots...But we’ve deeply ensconced ourselves in the world of pulps and comics.”

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (2011)
Hollywood is developing a big screen reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Buffy creator Joss Whedon. Did you hear that? its the simultaneous gasp of Buffy fanboys (and fangirls) worldwide.
Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original 1992 movie which spawned the television series, is developing the relaunch with Vertigo Entertainment. The characters and canon created in the television series will be completely abandoned.
According to Reuters, the goal would be to “make a darker, event-sized movie” with “franchise potential.” The story would follow a new vampire slayer who must step up to protect the new generation. Kuzui says the the new movie will hopefully take “Buffy into a new place.” The parties won’t rule out Whedon’s involvement, but are currently meeting with writers and hearing pitches.
I have yet to really give the television series a chance, but everyone I know with geek cred swears by it. I never thought that the concept was anything really special. It seems to me that Whedon’s characters and character development elevated the show above other typical genre series. And a big screen movie or television show without his involvement would most likely suck.

Cliffhanger (2011)
It's official, with the 80's already well plundered it seems the remake boat is moving into the 90's.
StudioCanal and Original Films are planning a remake of the Sylvester Stallone-led 1993 mountain climbing action thriller "Cliffhanger" reports Variety.
In the Renny Harlin-directed original, Stallone played a climbing expert who is forced to help a group of hijackers recover three suitcases containing $100 million lost in the Rocky Mountains.
The film went on to become a major hit, raking in $255 million worldwide and scored generally positive reviews for its impressive action including a mid-air hijack sequence and the famous opening suspense set piece involving a woman whose equipment fails during a perilous climb across a deep chasm.
The new version will center on a group of young climbers and will "feature multiple cliff-face locations". A screenwriter is being sought with production aiming to kick off next year.
Neal Moritz, who is also producing the upcoming "Escape from New York" remake for Warners, will produce.

Total Recall (2011)
Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films are in final negotiations to develop and produce for Columbia Pictures a contemporary version of Total Recall, the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.
The movie explores one of Dick's favorite topics, reality vs. delusion, as audiences never knew whether or not the story was a dream. Either way, the movie grossed a very real $261 million worldwide.
Calling Dick's story "prescient," Moritz said he hoped the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects can help tell the "Recall" story in a fresh way.
