The Crow (2011)

Stephen Norrington is set to write and direct a remake of The Crow. The man who brought us Blade and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is looking to recreate the character in an entirely different light to the one we saw him in (or out of) in the Alex Proyas directed film starring Brandon Lee.

This would mark the first film that Norrington has been involved with since The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a film that so many people slated upon its release.

Interestingly, when I look back on that film, I really enjoy it and its characters, and for a superhero ensemble film you have to admit that it works a hell of a lot better than films such as Fantastic Four (Filmstalker review). I enjoy watching that film and the characters and story are pretty damn good, I would have been excited to see them in a sequel, and yet after that film both Stephen Norrington and Sean Connery never made another film, and in fact Connery slates the film when questioned about it.

It seems, according to Variety, that Norrington was close to making another film a few times, he was close to making The Mutant Chronicles some time ago and then he was signed to direct Clash of the Titans but left after he said he could not excite Warner Bros. with his idea nor influence the script enough for his liking.

After The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen he felt demoralised and went away to concentrate on other aspects of his life, but now it would seem the time and the project are right. A recreation of The Crow.

Apparently he wants to create a realistic take of the character, in his own words:
“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary style.”

Now that does have some appeal, although there's a concern that he would become just a dark vigilante. Or really is that a concern at all? Perhaps that would be a good turn for the character.

Reading the article it seems that there's still some paperwork to be done on the deal, but Stephen Norrington could be writing and directing a remake of The Crow very soon. The question is do we want one, is there space for another dark hero, and will enough people have accepted or forgiven The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

  2. It sounds like it would be stupid...

He should just leave it alone...

If anyone is going to do another Crow, they should just try to make a really good sequel or just leave it alone...

  3. LEAVE IT ALONE! IT WILL BE STUPID AND NO ONE WILL WATCH IT!

  4. No remake!! Documentrys are never good!!

  5. I, for one, would love to see a big budget remake of a favourite film of mine... The other low budget sequels didn't do the original justice.

  6. Ok so fuck everyone who thinks this is even a slightly good idea. They will never recreate the magic or heart the original had not to mention I feel that out of respect to Brandon Lee this movie should never be remade I mean he only fucking died making it so in conclusion everyone involved with this movie can suck my balls

    Thanks: Mr. Fuck you

  7. should not do a remake but they should make another one that lives up to the first one. After city of angels, they just went crazy with the stuff and ruined what the orginal concept was about

  8. Yes, please do a remake, but let Tim Burton direct, Danny Elfman provide the music and add Johnny Depp as Eric Draven!

  9. oh no.... it's happening! .. people!.. this is the end of the original films! .. let's hope this crow is more like the comic book.. and.. not a bastard vertion of the first awesome crow film!.. how will have the lead role to try to igualate the great brandon lee!!!??...

I hate this idea of killing such a great and "must-b-seen" film as the crow with lee...

  10. this would be a very STUPID thing to do. NO ONE can be Brandon Lee. NO ONE. I would never watch it. I tried to watch the 2nd one, but fell asleep, so it must have been stupid. Leave this movie alone. Remake any movie you want, but leave this one alone please. This is a cult classic, and it would be very bad to fuck up one of the greatest movies of all time. It makes me sad, and pissed off all at the same time to hear about this bullshit. Like dude up there said, Brandon DIED making this movie, so let it be. It is HIS movie! PERIOD!! No one could utter the words "it can't rain all the time" and it actually be as meaningful as it was when he said it. I even got that shit tatted on my wrist. Please dont do this to us. We love it the way it is. TRUE Crow fans LOVE it the way it is.

  11. No. Just, no. Worst idea I've heard this year, you can't replace Brandon. Why is everyone trying to remake brilliant films? Just leave well enough alone. Please.

  12. Without Brandon Lee . . . There is no Crow.

  13. You can not remake this film, and by that I don't mean in my opinion you shouldn't remake this film, I mean you CAN NOT remake this film. The crow isn't really a film about some one who comes back from the dead to avenge the murder of their loved one, it's a story about the horrendous things people do in the face of poverty, desperation and grief. Alex Proyas proved he knew this when he referenced Devils Night so much in the original and the death of Brandon Lee just reinforced it. The only way to make a new and decent Crow movie would be to set it and film it in New Orleans and get some one who has just buried a loved one to write the script. Is it really worth exploiting the very real pain of real people just to tell a story that has already been told. The original Crow got away with that because J O Barr wrote the story off his own back and did it as a kind of therapy to move past his own loss and the collapse of Detroit was never covered by the international news. Can you imagine the public out cry if some one tried to do it again using events which have been so widely covered. It would force the film to become santized and politically correct and that just isn't the Crow. Seriously, give up on this project, it isn't going to work.

  14. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE A REMAKE OF THIS AWESOME FILM...NO ONE CAN TOP BRANDON LEE. NO NO NO THE ORIGINAL IS BETTER OFF BEING THE ONLY ONE AND A REMAKE WOULD ONLY RUIN IT AND I DONT WANT ONE OF MY FAVE MOVIES EVER TO SUCK MY FAMILY AND I HAVE LOVED EVER SINCE IT CAME OUT (I WAS A BABY) AND IT IS WAY BETTER THAN MOST MOVIES TODAY..DOING A REMAKE OF ONE OF THE BEST FILMS EVER IS THE WORST THING ANYONE COULD DO....JUST DONT DO IT

  15. can't hollywood ever come up with new movies, all the do is have remakes and make them lousy, or they change the names on it. i am not going to see this at all

  16. SHOULD NOT FUCKING TOUCH THIS AMAZING FILM. NO ONE WILL BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS.

  17. Dont remake The Crow. Thats just fucking stuped. You will not make your money back with it. I have been with The crow when it frist started. The frist movie did well but after that the 4 movies after that did not at all. Brandon Lee give his life for this movie. Dont fuck it up with saying his work was so bad were you need to make a remake. Witch it was not. I love that movie.

  18. The original Crow would be almost impossible to match, Johnny Depp has the right face and attitude for it, not the body though. The rest of the movies sucked, thought I did like the one with Eric Mabius most of all of them, it was the closest in nature to the original

  19. Coming from having worked in the Film Industry I understand the desire for dredging up Past greatness and trying to ride that success to the bank but This much you can take to the Bank is if you make this remake you do a great disservice to the memory of Brandon Lee and to the Fans who made this Franchise what it is today. If you must make one Pay homage to the Fans and Brandon's Memory by making a successful Sequel that doesn't go straight to DVD or suck entirely

    ReplyDelete
  20. DO NOT MAKE A REMAKE...IT WONT WORK, ITS NOT BRANDON LEE. END PRODUCTION AND BURN IT

  21. i think a remake would be cool! the movie was great! what happened to Brandon lee was sad but you cant believe in curses and nonsense of that sort! the perfect actor to play the part would be Tony Jaa!!!!!

  22. The crow is a great film why remake it. Please Don't Do It

    ReplyDelete
  23. although i agree with both sides negative and positive, the original is such a great film you really can't out do it. Wrong, if it does go through a remake, you must follow the original story from the pages of the graphic novel. Such as, his encounter with the cowboy skeleton and explain why the character becomes completely wrapped in twine and black duct tape.

    ReplyDelete
  24. idk what to think of this remake, but the kid who is rumored to play eric had the right personality, and his voice omg he might just be able to do this "Ethan Peck"

  25. They should take off The Crow: Stairway to Heaven. Too many loose ends there and it can evolve into a real movie. That way it'll continue with Eric Draven and the original story, but not be f*cked up by the masterpiece The Crow!

  26. I would love to see a remake of this movie, but not by this guy. I also would have loved to see what heath ledger could do with the character of eric draven! but I think Johnny depp wouldn't be a bad eric draven though.

  27. ''The Crow''? Gee I wonder what it's about, im curious about the ending how original..ha,aren't these production companies aware that there are thousands of stories fact and fiction just waiting to be told scripts great original scripts just floating around tinseltown, the issue here is that these producers don't want to fund these projects, they are extreme dweebs, its a sad shame that the most untalented have the most money.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm actually really disappointed by this news.

A remake of the original movie whilst losing all the influences of the style of the graphic novel?

The very least he could do is make it more faithful to the graphic novel. Sure, the original movie is great, but it deviates quite a bit from the graphic novel.

I'll probably still see this movie, but my expectations are low. Very low indeed.

  29. just great, another fantastic film being remade for profits, how many classic movies do they have to fuck up

shit i know how about you also make a remake of natural born killers, you can get zac efron to play mickey

  30. I hope that they won't remake this movie... It is not only that i don't like the idea of recycling a story that's already been told, but the original was an exellent movie and I am afraid that this one will destroy the image of Brandon Lee.
So let's hope that The Crow will be remembered for as the original and not the remake...
    Long Live Brandon Lee

  31. I would agree with most that a re-make should not be made. But after reading into this and what the author of the Crow has stated. All people can remember from the first movie. Is that Brandon Lee died on the set. The Idea of the Crow is bigger than that. So as long as he does not butcher it. I am ok with it. The person who plays Eric Draven will have to give the performance of their lives. Much like Heath ledger did for the " Joker" Brandon Lees " Eric Draven ranks up their with Jack Nicholos "Joker" Good luck to all in Involved

  32. i am in favor of a remake or perhaps a sequal if its done right it cant be done just about profits as it will fuck the story and the characters up making it rushed and cheesy if any director and cast is to be in a movie like the crow they need to know the story and the essence the characters have only then will the crow movies start doing well again

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Crow (1994) was way too original for any remakes.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Dicks! Too early for a remake, and what would be the improvements? CGI?!?!!?

  35. has enyone thought that this film is to celibrate gienius and to morne the original crow die off, yes brandon lee was AMAZIMNGLY AMAZING and HE IS THE ONE AND ONLY but.... i WILL watch this film then if they have defiled this movie in ENY WAY SHAPE OR FORM they will ALLL BURN TO THE FUCKING GROUND AND DIE SLOWLY IN HOSPITAL THE CROW MUST LIVE AGAIN and i hope that you will all get involved on this too and say MAKE THE BEST CROW YOU CAN BUT.......FUCK IT UP AND YOUR DEAD REALY DEAD!!!!!!
the original crow was my favoret film and still is and so enyone who belives the crow can live then vote yes

  36. If you remake this film I swear to god that no one will go watch it. Because if this movie is remade no one will want to watch it. Why would you want to remake this film in the first place anyways? Honestly!!!!, I'd like for that question to be answered. please for all the fans and to Brandon lee don't do this. Respect him by not remaking this movie.

  37. i heard the new crow is actually supposed to be a female is this true anyone and if so is it sarah

    ReplyDelete
  38. i think if it is so they really should make it based of the original with rochelle davis playing sarah again but as an adult and as the new crow. she dies somehow and her connection to the crow brings her back.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous, I think that is the only way that this remake could happen, but that really wouldn't be a remake... The first Crow movie is my favorite movie ever, and the only way to do it justice is to either end it or to have Sarah be the new Crow. It is from a comic book, so it can go on... But, it is still the best movie EVER MADE...

    ReplyDelete
  40. How much do Hollywood directors get paid? Why can't they think of a new film? Why this one? It is going to pull apart the pureness and meaning of why this story and film was ever made. Brandon Lee said himself "Nothing like this has been done before". So that says it all Brandon made that film. Please dont do it! Leave it alone Brandon R.I.P

  41. This movie should never EVER be remade. It is the most perfect creation with such amazing actors and actresses that can never be recreated except by the ones who portrayed them. I feel such heartache right now because such an amazing movie with the beautiful Brandon Lee just might be materialized into something shameful. Brandon Lee gave his heart and LIFE to the original. Don't make it a copy..

    ReplyDelete
  42. lol it could be good there are 4 Crow movies already.. And a remake might be good. Also as far a sequals go... There are none in the row world... Each story is separated from each other.. Like people mad that crow 2 wasn't about eric draven.. As if it could be. He killed his killers and went back to heaven.. Yall nead to read some of the old comic boks .

    ReplyDelete
  43. ...cont from above.... One thing that would be ool for a remake to do is give a voice to the crow.. While reading the original comick books I loved how angry and violent the crow was directing them to the kill ... Saying things like '' that's the one who killed you now bring me his eys...'' sure Brandon was epic but the crow wasn't about brandon or his haracter.. Had he lived he wouldn't have been in the sequal anyway.. His story was over with. As far as remake just keep it to the original script don't change characters.. Or key events..

  44. There is no respect for the dead anymore. This is the biggest insult to Brandon Lee.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Tired of everyone saying "with respect to the person who died in it" people die this is a fact of life . As they say ,"THE SHOW MUST GO ON" . However i agree a remake of this awesome movie especially as a documentary would just be lame... Mayber a better sequel than that other crap lol

    ReplyDelete
  46. all the other crow movies suck but the first one was the best and still is

    ReplyDelete
  47. I thought it was a good idea until I read that he was going to try and change the character. The gothic creepy style he has is what made the original movie.

    ReplyDelete
  48. are people stupid. can everyone not understand the fact that only one person that can play eric draven is brandon lee. we all know that. and that it was his last movie he made and now directors are going to change it. get away!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. No respect.I can only pray that James O' Barr has a say in this. The last thing we need is another hack remake of the original memorial movie that should be left alone. And going by Norringtons other movies, its going to be nothing more than a joke. His movie stylings are best suited to the bubblegum fest crap like Extraordinary Gentlemen.Again.........no respect.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Its a pity our comments here won't mean dick.no one important is going to read them or care.and we will just have to sit back and watch that failed loser Norrington ruin another movie.he's the last person who should be allowed to do a remake of"The Crow".movie greats like the original should be left alone.BUT as I said....none of these comments will ever be heard.
